Missouri state law specifically states in order to obtain a concealed carry weapon permit an applicant must live-fire a weapon while an instructor is present. Our office cannot process permit applications with an "online only" safety training course.

571.111. Firearms training requirements — safety instructor requirements — penalty for violations.
2. A certificate of firearms safety training course completion may be issued to any applicant by any qualified firearms safety instructor. On the certificate of course completion the qualified firearms safety instructor shall affirm that the individual receiving instruction has taken and passed a firearms safety course of at least eight hours in length taught by the instructor that included:
(1) Handgun safety in the classroom, at home, on the firing range and while carrying the firearm;
(2) A physical demonstration performed by the applicant that demonstrated his or her ability to safely load and unload either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol and demonstrated his or her marksmanship with either firearm;
(3) The basic principles of marksmanship;
(4) Care and cleaning of concealable firearms;
(5) Safe storage of firearms at home;
(6) The requirements of this state for obtaining a concealed carry permit from the sheriff of the individual's county of residence;
(7) The laws relating to firearms as prescribed in this chapter;
(8) The laws relating to the justifiable use of force as prescribed in chapter 563;
(9) A live firing exercise of sufficient duration for each applicant to fire either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol, from a standing position or its equivalent, a minimum of twenty rounds from the handgun at a distance of seven yards from a B-27 silhouette target or an equivalent target;
(10) A live-fire test administered to the applicant while the instructor was present of twenty rounds from either a revolver or a semiautomatic pistol from a standing position or its equivalent at a distance from a B-27 silhouette target, or an equivalent target, of seven yards.

Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) Permits:
As of Jan. 1, 2017, there will be no training requirements to carry a concealed weapon in the state of Missouri.
Permit-less carry or "Constitutional Carry" is now allowed in Missouri.
The Newton County Sheriff's Office will continue to process CCW permits as normal for those that wish to carry a permit and be able to conceal carry outside the state. You will be able to carry in the 37 states that honor the Missouri CCW Permit. There are 17 places that firearms are prohibited by state statute. Under the new law, you can be charged up to a misdemeanor for having a firearm on these premises by carrying the firearm permit-less. If you have a Missouri CCW Permit and carry a firearm in a location where firearms are prohibited, you cannot have criminal* charges pressed against you. [RSMo 571.107]
*may be charged with an infraction and subject to fine of $100. Subsequent violations can result in criminal charges.

How to Obtain a Permit:
The following is required at the Sheriff's Office to process your permit:

- Certification of Completion (obtained after attending a State of Missouri approved 8 hour class)
- Completed Application (available at our office)
- Valid Driver's License or Military Identification or Copy of Citizenship Papers for non-US born residents
- $62.00 fee to the Newton County Sheriff's Office (Cash/Check/Money Order)
- $26.00 fee to the State of Missouri to process your criminal background check (Check or Money Order ONLY)
If using cash to pay the fee, please bring exact change. We cannot process debit or credit cards.
Applicants must submit fingerprints to process your criminal background. You do not need to bring anything for this, it is completed by our jail staff.
Our office will have 45 days to issue or deny your request for the permit. If approved, the permit will be issued within 3 days.

- Any Private Property which is clearly marked with posted signs as being off-limits to concealed firearms
